You don't need to have everything figured out to begin. Sometimes clarity comes through the process of exploring, not before it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you're experiencing challenges, feeling stuck, or simply wanting support to better understand yourself, therapy may be helpful. There's no specific criteria you need to meet.

You're welcome to book a free 10-minute phonecall to help you explore whether this feels right for you, with no commitment required.

How long does therapy take?

The length of therapy varies for everyone and depends on your individual needs and goals. Some people find short-term support helpful, while others benefit from longer-term work. We'll discuss this together and regularly review your progress to ensure therapy continues to meet your needs.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person sessions?

Online therapy offers the same evidence-based approaches as in-person sessions and can be just as beneficial. Many people find the convenience and comfort of attending from their own space helps them engage more openly. We'll work together to ensure the online format supports your therapeutic goals.

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We'll discuss what's brought you to therapy, explore your goals and concerns, and talk about how we might work together. There's no pressure — this is your space to ask questions, share what feels comfortable, and see if it feels like a good fit.

How does online therapy work?

Sessions are conducted via secure video conferencing from a private space of your choice. You'll need a device with internet, camera, and microphone. A secure video link and instructions will be sent before your session.

Do I need a referral to attend an appointment?

A referral isn't necessary. However, if you wish to access Medicare rebates, you'll need a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP. We also accept referrals from NDIS, Workcover, and TAC.

If you're unsure about your situation, please let us know when you contact us and we can discuss what's needed.

What are your fees?

Our standard fee for a session is $220. Medicare rebates are available if you have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan, with your out-of-pocket cost being $121.05 per session.

Learn more about our fees below.

How long is each session?

Each session is typically 50 minutes long. This provides enough time to explore your concerns meaningfully while maintaining a manageable structure.

How do I book an appointment?

You can book an appointment by completing our contact form. We also offer a free 10-minute phonecall if you'd like to ask questions or discuss your needs before committing to a full session. We'll work with you to find a time that suits your schedule.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

Not at the moment. We're currently in the process of establishing in-person services. If you have questions about online therapy or would like to know when in-person sessions become available, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Standard Session Fees

The Australian Psychological Society recommends a fee of $318 each session. At Matrix Psychology, fees have been carefully considered to balance accessibility with the professional skills and experience provided. We believe quality psychological care should be accessible to those who need it, which is why we have set our fee for a 50-minute psychology session at $220. To offer greater flexibility, Saturday appointments are available at $230.

If you require reports, letters, or documentation for other professionals or services, these are charged on a pro-rata basis at the hourly rate of $220, depending on the time required to complete them.

Medicare Rebates

If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $98.95 per session. This brings your out-of-pocket cost to $121.05 for weekday sessions and $131.05 for Saturday appointments, for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.

To access Medicare rebates, your MHTP must be in place before your first session. Medicare will not issue a rebate if the referral is dated after your appointment. If you're unsure how to arrange a MHTP or have questions about eligibility, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Please note that a Mental Health Treatment Plan is not required to attend sessions — you're welcome to book privately if you prefer.

Private Health Insurance

Psychology services may be partially covered under your private health insurance extras cover. Coverage amounts vary between providers and policies, we recommend contacting your insurer directly to confirm your entitlements. We can provide you with an invoice statement to claim through your provider.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

Matrix Psychology accepts NDIS participants with approved funding for psychology services. Sessions are at $232.99 per 50-minute session, in line with current NDIS guidelines. Any reports or letters required under NDIS will be charged on a pro-rata basis at the hourly rate of $232.99, depending on the time required to complete them.

If you're accessing services through NDIS, please let us know when you contact so we can discuss your plan and ensure the appropriate documentation is in place.

Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and WorkCover

Matrix Psychology accepts referrals through TAC and WorkCover for eligible clients, please note that there may be an out-of-pocket cost. If you're accessing services through one of these referrals, please let us know when you contact so we can discuss the specific requirements, processes, and any applicable fees.

Cancellation Policy

We understand that sometimes plans need to change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please provide us with at least 24 hours notice. This helps us offer the appointment time to someone else who may be waiting for support.

Appointment reminders are sent out to help you keep track of your scheduled sessions. If your current appointment time no longer works for you, please let us know and we'll do our best to find a time that better suits your schedule.

Missed appointments and cancellations made within 24 hours of your scheduled session will incur the full session fee. Please note that these fees are not eligible for Medicare rebates. We recognise that emergencies and unforeseen circumstances can occur, and we'll consider these situations with care and discretion.
